What does the average American know (or think they know) about Islam?

I've been reading answers here (and even some questions) that are so full of hatred of Muslims. Do they have any concept of what Islam teaches? Are they aware that the god in the bible is the same one in the Qu'ran? What is their image of Muslims in general?
